Despite the Chicago media's assertion that the Cubs want Joe Girardi as their next manager, the front office has gone full speed ahead on interviewing new candidates to replace Dale Sveum.

And the names that have surfaced so far do not give us much confidence in the selection process.

Manny Acta interviewed with Epstein, Hoyer and Randy Bush. ''Yes, I came in and spent a few pleasant hours with Theo (Epstein), Jed (Hoyer) and Randy Bush," Acta replied in an email Tuesday morning to the Tribune. ''Basically getting to know each other on a personal and professional level.
''I'm sure they have more people to talk to ... so we'll just let the process play out.''

Acta, 44, has managed the Nationals and Indians, but his managerial record at those two places was poor. However, the Cubs believe he can work well with young players. Acta, in 6 seasons as a manager, compiled a record of 372-518 (.418 winning percentage).

The Cubs have also interviewed two "friends" of the front office: former Diamondback manager A.J. Hinch, who had a bad, short run in Arizona, and who is now the Padres assistant general manager;  and Padres bench coach Rick Renteria.

Hinch had an unremarkable 7 year major league career, ending with a .219 batting average and a career WAR of 0.1. As a manager, in 2 years he had a 89-123 record (.420 winning percentage).

Renteria also had an unremarkable 5 year major league career. He ended with a career batting average of .237, but with a NEGATIVE 0.5 career WAR. He has no major league managerial experience.

None of these candidates instill any form of confidence to lead the wayward Cubs to victories.
